Every Meta campaign is organised through a simple three-level hierarchy: Campaign → Ad Set → Ad.
Understand the role of campaigns, ad sets and ads, what types of decisions typically live at each level, and how to read a Meta account without treating it as one giant list of adverts.
Three levels organise almost everything.
Campaign
Defines the broad strategic purpose and contains one or more ad sets.
Ad Set
Typically controls important delivery choices such as audience, placements, schedule and some budget decisions.
Ad
Contains the actual creative, copy, identity, destination and message the customer sees.
A simple account structure
Think strategic purpose.
The campaign level establishes the broad outcome or objective around which the activity is organised.
You will explore campaign objectives in detail later. For now, think of the campaign as the top-level container that tells you what the advertising programme is fundamentally trying to accomplish.
Think delivery conditions.
Who can receive the advertising?
Audience decisions commonly sit at ad-set level.
Where can delivery occur?
Placement choices can define which environments are available for delivery.
When can delivery happen?
Timing and scheduling decisions can sit within the ad-set structure.
Where is spend controlled?
Depending on the campaign setup, budget may be managed at campaign or ad-set level.
Think customer-facing message.
The ad level contains what the user actually experiences: imagery, video, copy, headline, call to action, business identity and destination.
If two ads sit inside the same ad set, they can usually share the same broad delivery setup while testing different creative approaches.
Where would this decision normally belong?
Select a decision.
Build a three-level structure.
Choose a business and write one campaign, two ad sets and two ads inside each ad set.
Your ad sets should differ for a logical reason, and your ads should represent different creative or messaging ideas.
Check your understanding.
Campaign → Ad Set → Ad is the core organisational logic of Meta Ads. Campaigns define strategic purpose, ad sets define much of the delivery setup, and ads contain the customer-facing creative and message.
