Module 1 · Lesson 4

Google Ads and Meta Ads can both produce customers, but they often meet those customers in very different states of mind.

Lesson objective

Understand the fundamental difference between intent capture and demand generation, and why this changes targeting, creative and performance expectations.

Google Search

The need often exists before the advert appears.

A person searches because something has already triggered a need, question or intention.

Need exists→User searches→Advert responds→User evaluates→Action
Meta

The advert may create the next step.

On Meta, the person may simply be browsing content. The advertiser has to earn attention before it can communicate relevance and generate interest.

User consumes content→Creative earns attention→Interest develops→User evaluates→Action
Google Search

Intent capture

Often strongest when people are already expressing a need through a search.

Meta Ads

Demand generation

Often strongest when persuasive creative can introduce, demonstrate or stimulate interest in an offer.

Creative

Meta places much more pressure on the advert itself to create context.

A Google search query can tell the advertiser a great deal about what the user wants. On Meta there may be no equivalent explicit query.

The creative therefore has to do more work: stop attention, establish relevance, introduce the problem or opportunity and give the person a reason to continue.

On Meta, creative carries part of the targeting burden.

A strong advert can help the delivery system identify who responds positively while also explaining why the offer matters.

Example

The same business can use both channels differently.

Google

“Emergency boiler repair Cambridge”

The user has a clear immediate problem. Search advertising can capture that existing intent.

Meta

“Is your boiler costing you more than it should?”

The advertiser creates context and may stimulate interest in servicing, replacement or efficiency before the user searches.

Multi-Channel Reality

Meta and Google can influence the same customer journey.

A customer might first discover a brand through Meta, later search for the product on Google and eventually return directly to buy.

That does not make one channel inherently superior. They may simply be doing different jobs.

Which channel has the more natural starting advantage?

Select a customer situation.

Choose a scenario.
Practical Challenge

Compare the job of Meta and Google.

Choose one business. Write one sentence describing what Google Search could do for it and one sentence describing what Meta could do. The answers should be different.

Knowledge Check

Check your understanding.

1. Which best describes a common strategic difference between Google Search and Meta?
2. Why is creative particularly important on Meta?
3. A person discovers a company through Instagram, then later searches its name on Google. What is the best interpretation?
4. Which channel is inherently better?
Key takeaway

Google Search often responds to explicit demand. Meta can reach customers earlier and help create that demand. This is why attention, creative and customer awareness play such a central role in Meta advertising.
